This was my first non-fiction picture book and I wanted to keep the artwork bright and cheerful while also being accurate and informative. There was a wealth of reference material from the London Transport archive which made approaching the brief a fascinating job. It was easy to get lost in nostalgia sifting through the historic photos. There were so many interesting facts to take in. I was lucky enough to have a trip to the London Transport Museum private collection of old trains, buses, signage, and original poster artwork from many years ago.
The project was commissioned by Bloomsbury publishing in partnership with Transport for London. They asked me to work on it because of my link to TFL through my permanent artwork on the platforms of Shadwell Station, and one of the designers at Bloomsbury followed me on Instagram.
I created the artwork on paper with gouache and ink. The biggest challenge was getting so much information into the individual spreads in a coherent way.
The most enjoyable part of the project was working with historical reference and recreating scenes and clothes from the last century, and being a continuing part of the long tradition of London Transport commissioning artists, designers and illustrators, and eating cake with the designers.
So proud of this lovely book and honoured to have been asked to illustrate it. It is out now on sale.
